I set some goals for myself for August to work on accomplishing my 101 in 1001 challenge. I didn't meet all my goals, but I still think I did pretty well! 4. Try a bikram yoga class. -- Did not do this yet. I think a weekend class is my best bet, but my weekends are already pretty busy in the upcoming weeks, so I'm not sure when I'm going to accomplish this. I went 5-for-7... not too shabby! Now I just have to think about what I want my September goals to be. ![]() Tuesday, July 27, 2010
I really , really want to complete all of my 101 in 1001 goals in the actual 1001 allotted days. I'm making pretty good progress so far, having completed 36 so far in 395 days... just slightly behind pace. But in order to actually accomplish this feat, I need to make a plan of attack. The following are goals I hope to accomplish by the end of August: 4. Try a bikram yoga class. Wish me luck! ![]() Thursday, June 10, 2010
One of my 101 in 1001 goals was to join a CSA. We had our first pick-up this week! Everyone we've talked to that has done one before warned us that we'd be getting SO many vegetables and that it takes some getting used to. We were expecting tons of veggies, but were a little disappointed with the amount. I'm hoping that it's just because we're only into the first week of the season, because we easily got through all of our veggies in just a few days. In our loot this week: Monday night, we made a bok choy and broccoli stir fry (we added in some tofu, soba noodles and shredded carrots). Photos taken by Adam with our fancy new camera! Tuesday, we made some garlic scape soup from one of our favorite cookbooks, Super Natural Cooking. Garlic scapes are the stalk of the garlic plant, which have a more mild garlic flavor. They look pretty funky! We added some of the sorrel to the garlic scape soup and added the rest to the salad greens. We ate the salad greens for lunch with a creamy chive dressing. (We only made the dressing from this recipe, using it on the mixed salad greens and sorrel, plus some additional veggies we picked up from the grocery store.) We have a little bit of salad greens left, which I'll probably take for lunch tomorrow. Our basil and cilantro plants have gone untouched so far, but are going strong! We're keeping them near our Aerogarden instead of by the window, because the Aerogarden is in our kitchen. Our other option would be to put the herbs by the window in the living room, where we'd probably neglect them. I'm excited to see what we get next week! It'll probably be pretty similar to what we got this week. I'm hoping that as the summer goes on, we'll get more veggies each week. I'd like to avoid buying too many vegetables in the grocery store this summer if we can. ![]() Monday, May 10, 2010
As of yesterday, I can now check off my 101 in 1001 goal* of running a half marathon! Woohoo! Aside from some strong wind gusts (including pretty much the entire last mile, where I think I may have been moving backwards at some point), the weather for the race was perfect. 50 degrees, slightly cloudy, no humidity. I didn't even finish my entire water bottle and I felt fine! I brought two packets of sports beans with me and probably only ate one of them (I combined them, so I don't know exactly), but I never hit that "wall." The first half of the race went great. I ran with my friend Carolyn and our half split was 1:09:25, which was 10:36 pace. Right around that time, my knees started to feel really tight, and at about mile 7.5, I had to stop and walk. Carolyn went on ahead and finished the whole race without walking! (Yay Carolyn! You rock!) I knew I was going to need some walking breaks in order to finish (they usually help my legs recharge and I go faster during my running intervals than I would if I ran straight through), so my goal was just to finish in 2.5 hours. I kept alternating running with a few short walk breaks until I got to mile 10. By that time, my left knee felt really tight. It felt okay while I was walking, but when I tried to run (or, more accurately at that point, to shuffle), it did not feel good. I finished the 10 miles just two minutes slower than I ran the GW Parkway Classic two weeks before, so I was pretty sure my goal of 2.5 hours was within reach... I just needed to cover the last three miles in about 13 minute pace. By this time, I was definitely walking more than running, but I tried pumping my arms during my running stretches as much as I could to go faster. I wasn't feeling completely exhausted, which surprised me... it really was my knee that was holding me back. I'd try to jog a little bit for a few minutes at a time and then basically power-walk in between. But when 17 minutes had passed and I hadn't seen the mile 11 marker yet, I figured I didn't have a shot at making my goal. There was no way I'd be able to run the last two miles at a fast enough pace to make it. I started extending my walking intervals. And then... I happened upon the mile 12 marker. (Note: neither Carolyn nor Adam had seen the 11 marker either. I'm guessing the wind had knocked it down.) But by then, I'd slowed down enough I knew I really couldn't do it. I think if I'd seen the mile 11 marker, I may have been able to push myself fast enough to make it in under 2.5 hours, but I ended up crossing the finish line at 2:32:35. I may not have met my time goal, but I did finish a half marathon and did it in under 12 minute pace. (Actually, prior to running the GW Parkway Classic, my goal was just to go under 12 minute mile pace... I didn't move up my time goal to 2.5 hours until after I did that race at sub-11 minute pace.) I don't think my knees are seriously injured (my right one was tight and sore by the end too), but just a little overworked. I think it's a stabilizing muscle issue, not tendons or ligaments or anything serious. I'm going to give my legs some time off, and I'm going to train a little differently for my next half marathon. (Yes, I definitely plan on running another one.) In the training program I used, the longest training run was 10 miles. The theory is that the excitement and adrenaline will take you the rest of the way, and yes... I finished, which was the point, but I wanted to finish stronger than that. The training program was for beginners and really is intended only to get you to the finish line, and encourages walking. Next time, I am going to try a more advanced training program that has longer training distances and some speedwork. (Uhhh, I also didn't do any of my training runs between the 10 mile race and the half marathon, except for one 5K race... I'm sure giving my legs that much time off didn't help matters either.) Distance: 13.1 miles * I also checked off another 101 in 1001 goal this weekend... I made a perfectly poached egg! On my first try! I used the technique I found on Beth's blog: 1.) Fill a large pan with sides full enough to cover the eggs and add vinegar to the poaching water. 2.) Bring the water to a boil and then down to a simmer before putting the eggs in. 3.) Crack the eggs in a dish and then pour into the water, don't crack them directly into the water. 4.) Leave the eggs for 3-4 minutes and then remove with a slotted spoon. Perfectly poached eggs! And so simple! Monday, May 10, 2010 | 10:16 AM | Comments (3)

The week before last, I ate like crap. I binged (although my "binges" are no longer several thousand calories in one sitting, but mostly consisted of several handfuls of Emily's chocolates and a few giant bowls of cereal) and I didn't bother tracking calories. I also skipped several workouts. It was just a bad week, and by Friday I'd put back on the weight I'd lost the previous two weeks (although I'm sure most of it was water weight) and felt gross. One of my 101 in 1001 goals is to eat whole foods (nothing processed) for a week. There isn't one specific, official definition of what eating whole, unprocessed foods means, but for me it means eating (1) no refined sugar or flour, (2) mostly whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes, and (3) "processed" foods so long as they contained no refined sugar or flour and I knew what every ingredient was. After last week, this seemed like the perfect week to attempt this goal. I planned our meals mostly out of the Super Natural Cooking cookbook (I mean, it has "whole and natural foods" right in the subtitle!). So, for example, I still ate whole wheat pita, yogurt, granola, whole wheat pasta... things I would be able to make if I had the ingredients, time and know-how. If it was an ingredient listed in Super Natural Cooking (like cheese or pasta), it met my standard of "whole foods" for this goal. (Exception: I ran the GW Parkway Classic 10 miler this morning and ate sports beans during the run. Considering I sweat a LOT when I run and have had issues in the past with unbalanced electrolytes when racing in humid weather, I was not going to mess around with that again.) Today is my last day and I have to say, it has been working out great. We tried a bunch of new recipes this week. I lost the weight I'd put in the week before, plus an additional 3 pounds... and I'd eaten more calories this than I had in other weeks where I only lost a pound. I cut back on eating sweets a lot this week, eating more fruit (including dates, which I have just discovered... yum!). Adam baked up some whole wheat sandwich bread from this cookbook yesterday and today (it required some fridge-time overnight), and it smells awesome! I can't wait for it to finish cooling so I can try a slice. I knew I was going to be starving after the race and unable to eat the bagels and commercial granola bars at the finish line, so I made Alton Brown's granola bars yesterday. It's kind of sticky and crumbly, but really good. I used a Mediterranean dried fruit mix from Trader Joe's with cherries, apricots and figs. (Had to chop up the apricots and figs.) They really hit the spot... I've eaten three already! (Oh, and I get to check that off my 101 in 1001 goals too!) (Oh, and I also get to check off my goal of going an entire week without buying any food or drink out (excl. grocery shopping)... pretty easy when my entire week of meals is planned in advance!) I really like eating this way. We planned this week's menu using the same approach. I may not be as strict, but I think as a general rule, I am going to try to keep as much of the junk out of my diet as possible. I already eat fairly healthy, but there is definitely some room for improvement. I'm not going to go totally crazy though... I am going to a baseball game on Wednesday and you can bet I'm gonna buy some funnel cake. :-) ![]() Wednesday, February 17, 2010
I've been chronicling my workouts over here for the past couple months (although, admittedly not doing a very good job of writing much about them in detail lately). I've been working on increasing my speed and today I ran an 8:26 mile! That is huge for me! For a long time (years!), the fastest I usually run is a 10 minute mile, so I am really happy that I was able to increase my speed so much in such a short time. I needed to take a walk break after that before finishing the rest of my workout, and I walked a lot of my fourth (and final) mile because my legs were tired, so my overall time for my run today wasn't all that great. Now I need to work on being able to run faster, for longer. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 | 09:51 PM | Comments (1)

I've made it past the halfway point of NaBloPoMo, so for my third weekly update for NoImYoSeMo (November Improve Yourself Month), I'm also going to update on my November 101 in 1001 goals. 101 in 1001: NoImYoSeMo: ![]() Sunday, November 15, 2009
Here's my second weekly update to the NoImYoSeMo (November Improve Yourself Month). Do the dishes and wipe down the counters in the kitchen every night before bed. Um, not so much. I blame it on the swine flu. As you can see, the flu pretty much got in the way of my doing anything productive this week. As far as my 101 in 1001 goals I'm trying to tackle in November, I'm just starting a Spark week today, I've managed to keep up with NaBloPoMo all month so far (halfway through!), and I've added two more photo-based entries. (I have a photo of the cheesecake to go back and add in at some point too.) Hopefully, next week will be better. I'm already starting off with a clean kitchen tonight! ![]() Saturday, November 7, 2009
I got up way too early this Saturday morning to head to the gym before going off to the Punkin Chunkin! Adam and I went last year with a bunch of our friends, which I mentioned here. You can see photos from last years Chunk taken by my friend Nick here. This year promises to be even better, seeing as we won't be freezing our butts off in ridiculously chilly, grey, windy weather. It's going to be in the mid 50s and gloriously sunny. I can't wait to get some pumpkin funnel cake and fried pizza. YUM! Oh, and there's even a special on the Chunk on the Discovery Channel... I actually watched last year's special with my parents and it was randomly showing again last Friday (probably in anticipation of this week). Honestly, the show doesn't even do justice to the awesomeness of the Chunk. They only featured the cannons and none of the centrifugal, catapult or trebuchet machines, which are WAY more fun and interesting to see, in my opinion. ![]() Monday, November 2, 2009
(Hee... it just asked if I wanted to correct "NaBloPoMo" to "Abominable.") I can't remember if I've actually done NaBloPoMo before. I'm pretty sure I haven't, because I usually go to visit my parents for Thanksgiving and wouldn't have taken my old laptop with me because it would have fallen to pieces on the trip. (By year 6 of its life, that laptop wasn't rating so high in the key category for a laptop -- portability. ) Anyway, I don't blog from their home computer because I'm too lazy to cover my trails, so now I'm positive I never decided to do NaBloPoMo before. That's going to change this year, because I'm going to use NaBloPoMo as motivation to check off some of the items from my 101 in 1001 list: 14. Stay within Spark calories for the entire week, 4X. (I've done this once already.) I also love Slynnro's NoImYoSeMo, which stands for November Improve Yourself Month. I'm going to add a few self-improvement goals for November that are not on my 101 in 1001 list: ![]() Sunday, November 1, 2009
Last night was the Fourth Annual Halloween Party, although the party has changed locations now that Adam and his roommates have moved out of their old house. I changed my costume idea twice in the past two weeks, from Robin Sparkles, to one of the girls from Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" video, to... the 2009 New York Mets. All of them. Well, all the injured players, which is pretty much the entire team. And no, I'm not flashing some gang signs there... one player broke his pinky, while another (Alex Cora) broke both of his thumbs. I'm also missing a knee brace for my right knee (Carlos Beltran), which I borrowed later in the evening. That right there shows you how miserable this season was; at least I was able to get some entertainment value out of it. (And for those of you who may be curious, in the World Series match up from hell, I am rooting against the Phillies, which does not mean I'm rooting for the Yankees.) Here's a close-up: In this photo, you can see that I've labeled the various player's injuries. The baseball fans at the party really appreciated the costume (as well as some stranger on the street, who said it was pretty funny). Also making an appearance, Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer. My cake pops from last year were requested, but I didn't feel like taking the time to painstakingly make those again. Instead, I made the cake balls (with the help of Carolyn, while Adam fled the apartment for the evening), which I think turned out pretty well. Hope you all had a fun Halloween! Did you dress up? What was your costume? ![]() Saturday, October 31, 2009
So, back at the end of September, I set a series of goals for myself to complete in October towards my 101 in 1001 challenge. Here's an update on how I did... 1. Run a 10-miler. -- Check! Not too shabby. Now I need to come up with a plan of attack for November! ![]() Sunday, October 4, 2009
You guys, I did it. I ran ten miles. TEN FREAKING MILES! And not only that, but I beat my original time goal that I had set before I started my training of two hours (12 min/mile pace). My 7, 8 and 9 mile long runs had all been between 12:20 and 13 minute pace, so I figured there was no way I was actually going to finish all ten miles in under two hours. So after those couple of runs, I had revised my goal to finish in 2:10, which would be 13 min/mile pace. And then today, I ran the first five miles at 11:15 pace. I could not believe I kept up that pace for so long, and I realized two hours might be within my reach. For the second half of the race, I allowed myself to walk at the start of each mile for 1-2 minutes. During my training runs, I'd really hit a wall once I got to 7 miles, probably because the farthest I'd ever run before this training was 6. Today, I didn't hit my wall until I started the last mile. I ended up walking a decent amount of mile 10, and I was sure that there was no way I was going to be able to run enough of it to get in under two hours. Then, I passed some of the race workers who said there was only 500 yards to go. I looked at my watch... 1:56:30. 500 yards is just over a quarter mile... I could do that in 3:30 minutes if I kicked it in. I worried they weren't really telling us the truth. (I mean, there were some people saying "You're almost done!" at mile 6. Yeah, right.) But, I started jogging again and when I turned the corner, I could see the finish line in my sights. I always somehow manage to have a burst of energy at the end and I ran it all the way in. 1:59:29 Under two hours. My feet now feel like they are about to fall off. I have ridiculous chafing on my thighs because my legs stopped sweating at mile 8. I'm dead tired. But I did it. I set my mind to it, trained hard for a few months, and ran TEN FREAKING MILES. And now, I'm taking next week off from running. Distance: 10 miles ![]() Tuesday, September 29, 2009
I've decided to use the upcoming month, October, to tackle a few of my 101 Things in 1001 Days. I want to write them down here so I remember to try to complete them this month. It's great to have a list and all saying that I plan to accomplish these things by such and such date, but I need to actually put a plan in place if it's going to happen. If this works well, I might try to make a plan of attack for meeting some of these goals at the beginning of each month. For October, I plan to complete: 1. Run a 10-miler. (Barring injury or illness, this should occur next Sunday.) Stay tuned to see how I do! ![]() Monday, September 14, 2009

"They" say that it takes 21 days to create a new habit. Apparently this is not true for boring tasks that you hate doing. As part of my 101Things in 1001 Days challenge, I said that I would floss every day for a month. I already was an okay flosser... maybe twice a week or so. (Certainly better than TS, who rarely flosses, yet has PERFECT TEETH.) Considering all the troubles with my teeth earlier this year and the fact that I handed over approximately 1/7th of my annual salary to the dentist, flossing would be a very good habit for me to develop. I figured for my teeth's sake, I should probably tackle this goal as soon as possible, so on July 14 (just after getting back from vacation), I started flossing every day for 30 days straight. And I did it. Which meant that my final day of the 30 day goal was last Friday. Check that one off the list! And then I haven't flossed since last Friday. Now, I'm sure you don't care at all about my dental habits and the last time that I flossed (perhaps TMI), but I am just saying this to say that there are some habits that just don't stick naturally, not matter how much you want them too. I just see flossing as one more annoying thing to do as part of my bedtime routine that is keeping me from hopping under the covers. Forget the fact that flossing takes about 60 seconds, those are 60 seconds that I could be in bed. I'm obviously going to need to work on this. I've mentioned before the fact that I am apparently still 9 years old and easily motivated by collecting stickers. In fact, for my 30 day flossing challenge, I did exactly that... each day I flossed, I got a smiley faced sticker in my planner. And it worked! I collected 30 smiley faces. I got a little thrill opening my planner each day and seeing those colored, foiled circles grinning up at me. So starting today, I'm going to go back to giving myself a sticker for each time I floss and hope that the habit eventually... sticks. I suppose I should also mention here that some habits are easier to develop... like taking vitamins every day. I checked off my goal of taking vitamins every day for 30 days straight from the 101 Things in 1001 Days challenge today. I think it helps that my multivitamin is a gummy vitamin that tastes just like gummy bears. I won't let myself take them until I've also taken my B vitamin and flaxseed oil vitamins first, but oh, do I ever want that yummy gummy vitamin! (And then, of course, I also would give myself a silver foil star sticker in my planner.) Apparently I can easily bribe myself with both stickers and candy. Gee, who woulda guesses? ![]() Saturday, July 4, 2009

After seeing Zoot's and Ashley's lists, I knew I wanted to do the "101 Things in 1001 Days" project myself. This past week was the SIXTH anniversary of my first post on this website... my sixth "blogiversary." I wanted to do something to mark the occasion so I figured it was the perfect time to do my 101 in 1001 list. Unfortunately, creating the list took much longer than I expected... even though I blatantly stole many ideas from other 101 in 1001 lists I've found. Here are the project guidelines: The Mission: Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days. Start date: June 27, 2009 I've posted my list below and will keep coming back to update... ![]() |
