Reading Challenge: I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell

(Recap: Back in October of last year, I proposed a Reading Challenge for myself. It's not going so well... I've only read two books off the list so far. That's pathetic. So I joined a book club to at least try to read something... )

Book: I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell by Tucker Max.

Verdict: HATE! Totally, totally hated the book. The author's stories are not only awful and disturbing, but he absolutely cannot write! I don't understand how so many people found it funny. He just seems like a total and complete asshole to me. Not to mention, once you read about three stories, you've pretty much read them all. Maybe if he was a better writer, I would have at least found them mildly entertaining or funny, but I thought his writing was atrocious. TS read a few pages and even he said they guy can't write for shit, and I have a feeling TS is in the target audience.

Next up on the Reading Challenge: I still haven't finished This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I probably will pick up something else instead and just start that one over again in a few months. Now that I'm relegated to riding the bike at the gym (stupid stress fracture), I should actually be able to get some more reading in, though. Also on the nightstand, but not the list are Naked by David Sedaris (started reading in an airport a few months ago) and the last Harry Potter book, which I plan to get to during Christmas week. The next book club book is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, but I won't need to read that until January.

Comments:

Interesting...I have heard mixed reviews on this book, but a lot of people I have spoken to really liked it...but I have a sense I would be more like you and not like it either. ESPECIALLY if he is a poor writer.

I just finished "The Stupidest Angel" by Christopher Moore (who is one of my *favorite* authors ever) and found it really smart and hilarious. I am now on to "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold...and it makes me cry at some point in every chapter, but it is very good so far.

Happy reading!!

Have you read any other of David Sedaris's books? I read Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim and then Me Talk Pretty One Day. I loved them both, but found Me Talk Pretty One Day even more funny...I laughed out loud a LOT.

We should do a virtual book club.

I can second that The Lovely Bones is a good book...but definitely not uplifting material.

Did you ever read the Time Traveller's Wife? I really enjoyed that book...anyway the movie is coming out soon and there is also one coming out soon for the Lovely Bones.

Okay sorry to ramble I suppose I should just write you an email...must. go. to. sleep.

I read and reviewed that book a month or two ago. It was awful. I laughed every time he made a quip about working on his writing or becoming a professional writer. He's terrible.
