Monthly Fitness Goal: May
May 10, 2010

Having just finished my first half marathon (yay! recap to come shortly), I plan to give my legs a break from running for a few weeks. Our next race isn't until July, when we have two 5Ks.

I really want to get back into yoga. I enjoy it so much when I do it, but I am really bad about making the time for it. This is especially ridiculous when you consider the fact that I do yoga from DVDs in my home, and not at the gym or a yoga studio. I have several great yoga DVDs that hardly ever get used. So, my goal for May is to do yoga 15 times this month. I've already got two down!

Monthly Fitness Goal: April Recap

This month's fitness goal can be summed up in two words: TOTAL BUST.

My goal was to strength train three times a week. I think I strength trained three times the whole month. Ugh. The problem really is that when I didn't make it the first week, I totally gave up. I'm pretty disappointed with myself for that. Such a lame reason to not even try to strength train regularly the other weeks. I am going to attempt this goal again sometime later this year.

Monthly Fitness Goal: April
April 01, 2010

My fitness goal for April is to strength train three times a week. Usually when I'm training for races, I tend to slack off a bit on strength training, especially my legs. It's totally backwards... I'm so concerned about my legs being too tired for the run, I just neglect to do lunges, squats, etc. so that I can complete my runs relatively soreness-free. Hello? My legs are NOT going to get stronger just from running, but I will get faster if my legs are stronger! I'm trying to do Body Pump twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and then I'll add in an additional strength session on Mondays. Even if I don't always have time for a full cardio workout, I should definitely be able to fit in a quick 30-minute intense circuit training strength workout three times a week.

Monthly Fitness Goal: March Recap
March 31, 2010

My March fitness goal was to run 50 miles. I fell well short in succeeding at that same goal in February, with only 34.21 miles. But last night, even after my legs were dead tired from Body Pump, I sloooooowly completed three miles, bringing my March total to...

50.61 miles! Woohoo! I did it!!

Monthly Fitness Goal: March
March 03, 2010

My monthly fitness goal for March is, again, going to be to run 50 miles. I'm training for a 10 mile race in April and a half marathon in May, so I will meet this goal easily if I do each of my scheduled runs. The first race of the season is going to be on March 13th (my 30th birthday!), and then we have Friday 5ks every week in April (plus the 10 miler). Knowing these races are just around the corner is hopefully the motivation I need to get back on track.

Monthly Fitness Goal: February Recap
March 02, 2010

My monthly fitness goal for February was to run 50 miles. Unfortunately, this did not happen. I ended up running 34.21 miles in February. As I mentioned in my last post, February was just sort of a bust for me. I was having a really hard time getting motivated to work out this month. I think the toll of the cold, short days was finally getting to me. I also felt like my time really just slipped away from me this month, in exercising and in all other parts of my life. I'm really hoping to turn things around in March and start getting my time more organized, especially because I am busy almost every weekend.

My legs have been totally dead ever since I ran that 8:30 mile earlier in February; it feels like I am running with bricks strapped to my sneakers. While they may have been strong enough to do it and I didn't aggravate any old injuries, they might not have been super ready for running that hard. I don't think I've run a sub-10 mile since then.

Workouts...
February 24: 2.5 miles in 28:00
March 1: 5K in 33:13

Monthly Fitness Goal: February
February 04, 2010

My monthly fitness goal for February is to log 50 miles total over the course of the month. That breaks down to four 3-mile runs per week, which isn't too bad... except that I haven't gone for a run yet this month! I start my half marathon training next week, so the miles will start coming on then, I suppose.

Monthly Fitness Goal: January Recap
February 03, 2010

My January fitness goal was to work out four times a week, which I did! Yay! It did require me to get up extra early on January 30 to go for a run before driving up to New York, but I managed to run my fastest 5K (treadmill) in a long time that morning.

Monthly Fitness Goal: January
January 01, 2010

One of my resolutions for 2010 is to set and accomplish a monthly fitness goal. I am much better about following a regular workout schedule when I am actually training for something or otherwise set some sort of goal. I totally fell of the wagon in December -- I only worked out nine times all month! Some of that time off was due to a bad cold, but halfway through the month, I just could not get motivated to get back into a regular gym schedule. Considering December is a month full of sugary, rich food and caloric drinks (mmm, eggnog!), it was a terrible time to skip workouts.

In addition to my monthly fitness goals, three of my year long goals for 2010 are to run an 8:30 mile, run a half marathon, and get back to my law school graduation weight (meaning, lose 20 pounds). I hope to use these monthly fitness goals to help me reach these three year long goals. Originally, I was going to set January's goal to be to complete the 30 Day Shred within the month. (Yeah, I've said that before.) But I feel like that might be too much to start out with, and really I need to get back into the habit of regularly scheduled workouts first. So instead, my monthly fitness goal for January is to workout at least 4 times a week.
